What is the Sailing Team?
The sailing team is made up of UW undergraduate students. We race competitively as a club sport and are a part of the Hoofer Sailing Club.
Click here for more information about the Hoofer Sailing Club.
Who do we race against?
Most of our racing takes place in the Midwest against other Midwest schools as a part of the MCSA (Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association). We also race at venues across the country and in National Championship regattas as a part of the ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association).
What do we race?
Dinghies (including Flying Juniors and 420’s). We also compete in single-handed events in Lasers and Techs. Regattas are either Co-ed events or Women’s events, so the men and women compete together regularly. Here’s a picture of our Home Lakefront on Lake Mendota – we have 12 420’s, 6 FJ’s as well as use of 15 Lasers, 45 Badger Techs, several Scows, and Keelboats.
When do we race?
Every weekend from the start of school to Thanksgiving weekend in the fall. In spring, we begin sailing when the ice melts and continue competing until mid-May
Who can join the Sailing Team?
Any interested undergraduate student at UW. Whether you know how to sail or not, we are willing to teach anyone that is willing to learn.
